    Where have I been?

Some of you might have wondered why I didn’t post last week. Well, to answer that question, I was undergoing open-heart surgery. I was suffering from severe aortic stenosis and aortic ascending aneurysm. So, I’ve got a brand new mechanical heart valve and a Dacron graft to replace my aneurysm.
The surgery was a success; now I’m recovering and doing well. My only residual effect is a pinched nerve in my arm that’s affecting my left hand and making it really hard to type and play guitar.

    My other endeavors

Right now, I’m pausing my other endeavors and focusing on getting better.

    A week in review

    What I’m learning about

markdown, just started using it, keep practicing it. I also tried out Copilot, and here’s what CoPilot says about Markdown, “Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004. It’s easy to write and read and easily turned into HTML. It was primarily designed for writing content for the web². Unlike WYSIWYG editors, which allow you to click buttons to format text, Markdown uses simple, text-based syntax. For example, to create a heading, you add a number sign before it (e.g., # Heading One). To make a phrase bold, you use two asterisks (e.g., **this text is bold**). Markdown is widely used for blogging, instant messaging, documentation, and more³. Give it a try—it simplifies formatting and makes writing for the web a breeze! 😊

Udemy 100 days of code using Python

    learned about:

    • loops
    • functions
    • variables
    • loops
    • data types

    Created some cool programs:

    • hangman
    • tip calculator
    • who pays the bill
    • ceaser cipher
    • secret auction

They all kicked my ass, and I struggled a lot with the hangman game and the Ceaser cipher.

On the freeCodeCamp front, I’m still dabbling around with HTML and CSS. Eventually, I’ll put my knowledge to the test when I update rjohnson.io, my portfolio, and my project website.

I am reflecting on my renewed practice of Stoicism and how it ties in with my CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), which I learned in therapy. The next step is to embrace minimalism.

    What I’ve been reading

I just completed the book Stoicism For Beginners by Kevin Garnett. I recommend reading this if you are new or just curious about Stoicism. If you’re interested, you can find the book here Amazon link

Next up on my reading list is Building a Second Brain by Tiago Forte. It teaches you how to build your own PKM or personal knowledge management system.

    What I’ve been watching

I’ve been enjoying One Piece, and the other anime I have been watching is Black Clover.

  • Hello world!

Welcome, my name is RJ, and I’m going to be taking you on a journey through life with me. I plan on using this site as almost like a journal/accountability partner/just keep me thinking and reflecting about what I’m doing and where I’m going.

    So a little about me

I’m a 36 year old happily married man. I have a lot of interests, probably to many, but they include:

    – Cooking, especially BBQ

    – Writing computer code

    – playing guitar

    – Miniature painting

    – penmanship/fountain pens

    – technology

As far as pets go I have one lovely and adorable black cat name Little Void.

What I’m currently working on in my life is working on a morning routine,  participating in this online course of 100 days of python code, and enjoying my guitar practice.  So if there’s anything you’d like to know about just ask. I plan on writing here about once a week.

Thank you all for being there for me.
